Skateboarding is an art form

Capturing Melbourne '08

By: Glenn Barry

Skateboarding is the act of riding and performing tricks using a skateboard.
A person who skateboards is most often referred to as a skateboarder or a skater.
Skateboarding can be a recreational activity, an art form, a profession, or a method of transport.
It has been shaped and influenced by many skateboarders throughout the years.
A 2002 report by American Sports Data found that there were 18.5 million skateboarders in the world, of which 85 percent who had used a board in the last year were under the age of 18, and 74 percent were male.

Skateboarding evolved from  small linear boards with no attributes in the 1940’s to the designed masterpieces we see today.
Skateboarding has in the past decades become an industry, reaching from equipment to clothing.

It is distressing that people repeatedly appear to dismiss the true art of extreme body-control that is needed when skating.

Currently skateboarding seems to focus on the tricks and the grades of difficulty within them. However, what I admire the most are the fragile, but almost ballerina like, body movements which define skateboarding as a pure art form in its self.

Skateboarders around the globe know Melbourne as being the city with the most freedom and the best street skateboarding spots any country can offer.
Depicted in my images are spots around Melbourne such as Docklands, Prahran, St. Kilda, Brunswick and also the newly developed Eastlink.

Society in Melbourne attempts to restrain skateboarders from expressing themselves through this angelic art form, by issuing fines, abolishing skate sites and hiring security guards to curb skaters’ presence.

To all the citizens of Melbourne who are not educated on skateboarding, we are not here to offend anyone. We are solely here to release from within ourselves an art form that expresses feelings from body, mind and spirit.
